This summer in NYC, previewing next spring's lines from our favorite brands and with a little extra time on our hands, we manifested conversations around the range of goods we carry in the shop and dove nose-first into several fragrance houses in SoHo and the West Village. To say our search was exhaustive would be underselling the vast world of fragrance, but we ducked into flagships for several lines you've certainly heard of, accumulating samples and a swell recommendation for a Mexican spot across town.
We bundled this first-hand experience with insights from some peers in the menswear space and consideration for our little Willamette Valley shop to land on Ranger Station as an expansion on our existing fragrance offerings.
Ranger Station is a Nashville fragrance house drawing inspiration from the same Americana nostalgia that influences many of the brands in our shop. The fit is as natural as an oxford or leather jacket.
Ranger Station is an independent, family-owned brand, with Steve and Jordan Soderholm squarely in the driver's seat. Their scents are often touted as unisex with some lean here or there. They don't claim a commitment to all-natural ingredients in their fragrances, but rather focus on striking a balance between their impact on both your body and the environment. The result is phthalate-free, vegan, and cruelty-free fragrance oils sourced sustainably worldwide.
Unisex eau de parfum and candles are both available now at the shop.
Eau de Parfum
For the uninitiated, Ranger Station's product, and many of today's most popular personal fragrances, are eau de parfum. This is a slightly less concentrated aromatic blend than traditional perfume, but more concentrated than eau de toilette and significantly more concentrated than the colognes historically marketed toward men. An eau de parfum is good for 4–8 hours of scent, but of course, this is unique to an individual's skin chemistry.
In the spirit of everyday wear, Ranger Station's 50ml fragrances clock in at $94, a notable contrast to luxury fragrance houses. Without guilt, you can layer a spritz on daily and establish a signature scent that your friends and lovers begin to notice.
Each bottle comes with a nifty little red cotton bandana, suitable for any typical bandana use. Wipe your sweat, wipe someone else's sweat, smartly accessorize, what-have-you.
Cocktail Candles
While, understandably, not all scents lend themselves to use as both parfum and as candles, Ranger Station does have a robust line of crossover scents, which we've leaned into.
For added whimsy, each candle is packaged such that you can clean the last of the wax out of the bottom of the container and welcome it warmly into its next life as a cocktail glass. Cocktail suggestions included with each scent. We're excited to try this one out in the shop—the promise of successfully getting the wax out seems to good to be true, but the Soderholms are confident enough in the process that they've supplied instructions.
