The R1 is great for those new to safety razors, sensitive areas, and daily shavers, whereas the R6 provides a more aggressive shave, for cleaning up a long beard or going a week or more between shaves. The other 6S selling point is its material. The entire 6S safety razor is constructed from 316L stainless steel as opposed to the more common brass handles and Zamak (zinc alloy, or "pot metal") heads. In theory, the stainless is more durable, providing a more "buy it for life" experience. While the difference for the average guy is likely negligible (are you really banging your safety razor around?), a butter fingers or someone roughing it out and about may prefer this more durable option.
